Differentiating between your limits and your limitations is an essential part of being the best you possible. Here at Krav Maga Martial Arts, we are always on a "Quest to be Our Best". We can't succeed at that unless we extend our limits and surpass our limitations. Did you ever realize there's a difference? ![]() Limits are physical. There are limits to what we can physically accomplish based on factors such as age or fitness level. That is why we have classes for different age groups, for example. We can't expect a 5-year-old to be as physically capable as a 10-year-old. But the same way that 5- year-old grows, and continues to improve physically as she grows, you too can increase your physical limits with proper nutrition and exercise. So while limits place constraints on what you might be able to do "right now", you can always extend those limits with effort. Limitations, on the other hand, are very different. They are purely psychological and mainly based on what we believe we are capable of. Confidence plays a big role here. We've all heard the quote, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." This perfectly describes limitations. They are self-imposed. We may not be consciously aware of these limitations because our sub-conscious plays a big role here. However, once conscious of the choice element in our limitations, we can begin to eliminate those same limitations. I talked about this today in my weekly YouTube talk to my students. Tony Robbins also addresses this phenomenon. He says that "Most people believe their doubts, and doubt their beliefs." Whether in reference to your health, a relationship, losing weight or getting in shape, we self-sabotage with these negative notions that have been instilled in our subconscious. The solution is to change our thinking. We must find a way to change the negative beliefs into positive ones.
Every time you think to yourself, "I couldn't possibly do that", tell yourself - out loud and with confidence - that you can do it. Even if you don't believe it at that moment, keep saying it. Our subconscious will eventually pick up on these positive reinforcers and your preconceived limitations will disappear. It won't be easy and it won't be overnight, but you can do it!
